Fancy Friday: Watercolor Wishes

This past week, I've been working on watercolor paintings that I'm giving two of my friends as wedding gifts. I haven't used watercolors in years - probably since high school - and I don't know why! The colors are gorgeous and it evokes such happy feelings for me. I've rounded up some watercolor prints that I'm currently craving (I'm absolutely in love with the first dress).

What's been inspiring your fashion choices lately?

Sun and Sand

This weekend, I was lucky enough to celebrate my best friend's birthday at Rehoboth Beach. We had an absolutely wonderful time! The weather was perfect and breezy - warm enough to lay out on the beach but cool enough to keep from roasting. Saturday was our "beach day" where we tried to catch as many rays as possible (slathered in SPF, of course). Embarrassing story that I'll reluctantly share - but only for the public service announcement. I wore a Target bandeau bikini that I purchased a few years ago. As soon as we got to the beach, I bent over to put my towel on the ground and while doing so, the plastic hook on the back of my bandeau broke (sadly, it must have been put through too much over the many beach trips, pool days, and spins in the washing machine). However, the worst part was the aftermath of the breakage... when the back of your bandeau breaks, your bathing suit top falls off... in front of the entire crowded beach. I rarely get embarrassed, so I didn't see it as a huge deal - luckily I packed another bathing suit! But my message is this: ladies, make sure that your swimsuit hooks are secure.

Fortunately, the rest of the day went a little more as planned. We had dinner at a delicious Mexican restaurant followed by drinks at a nearby karaoke bar. Before all of that, I was able to sneak out and take a few snapshots of the beach. I'm still learning how to use my new DSLR - so many options and controls - but every photo is an opportunity for me to learn more! I'm currently reading a lot of tutorials online (I have a Canon Rebel T3i), so I'd be happy to hear about any helpful sites you guys may know of! Here's a great set of tutorials if  you're interested.

Here's what my view looked like for the weekend:

Rehoboth Beach was a fantastic place to spend the weekend. There are lots of cute boutiques to browse, delicious restaurants to dine, and fun places to grab a drink. We also got cupcakes from a great bakery down there (called Cake Break) to celebrate my friend's birthday. Look how cute they look!

Hope you enjoyed your weekend. Let me know your favorite part in the comments!

Liebster Award

I just returned from a wonderful beach weekend and was happily greeted with a comment from a fellow blogger, Em of Mascara Warrior, telling me that she nominated me for a Liebster Award. I was super excited when I saw this and then immediately asked myself "what is it?" It's an award that people with relatively small blogs (under 200 followers) give to others in this category, and it's a great way to connect with and discover some new reading material.

Here are the rules for the award:

  • Link back to the person who nominated you.
  • Answer the eleven questions from the person who nominated you.
  • Create eleven questions.
  • Nominate eleven bloggers that have less than 200 followers.
  • Tell the bloggers you've nominated.

  • Without further ado, here are my answers to Em's questions:

    • If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
      • I studied abroad in Galway, Ireland a few years ago, and I would give anything to go back and visit! I met the most amazing people and saw such beautiful sights. I would love to travel back and relive the experience again!
    • Are you an extrovert or an introvert?
      • I am definitely an extrovert. I'm very outgoing, bubbly, and talkative, and I love being around others. This summer, I had foot surgery and spent around 2 months on the couch recovering. It was so difficult for me because I live for socializing!
    • What are some interests of yours besides beauty and makeup?
      • In my spare time, I try to pretend that I'm Martha Stewart. I love painting, cooking, and doing DIY projects! I also love taking walks at night, catching up on bad reality tv shows, and hanging out with friends.
    • You woke up late and have five minutes to do your makeup! What do you reach for?
      • Tinted moisturizer, a shimmery cream eyeshadow, mascara, and lipstick. I love putting on lipstick when I don't have a lot of time - it makes me feel put-together without having to try too hard!
    • What's your favorite type of clothing or accessory?
      • If you would come to my room, you would be completely appalled at the number of necklaces I have. I inherited my grandmother's love for jewelry, and I'm always on the hunt for clearance necklaces! I especially love statement necklaces since I think they're a fun addition and can totally change the look of an outfit.
    • What's the last thing that you genuinely laughed at?
      • I spent the weekend with some friends at the beach, and we laughed quite a bit over the past few days! Before they left, one of the girls was reenacting a hilarious story from college, and we were all howling with laughter.
    • What's your favorite book, movie, song, or television show?
      • I'll answer all of them! Book - The Catcher in the Rye; Movie - Garden State or American Beauty; Song - Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley; TV show - Friends
    • What skill do you wish you had, or one you wish you could do better?
      • I really, really wish I could sing! When I get in my car and I belt out tunes with the music blasting I'm convinced that I'm good enough to score a record deal. Yet, when I turn down the music, I realize that my voice sounds terrible (like really terrible).
    • If you could speak any language fluently, what would it be and why?
      • I took French for 6 years, but I am far from fluent! I would love to speak it better - it's a beautiful language. I also love Paris, so I would love to be able to live there one day.
    • Name something off of the top of your bucket list.
      • Sky dive. I crossed bungee jumping off my list a few years ago, but now it's time to take an even bigger jump!
    • What do you usually do when you want to have fun?
      • I'll go out for a drink with some friends or head to the mall and window shop.

Here are the questions I'd like my nominees to answer!
    • Favorite ice cream flavor?
    • If you could own a store, what would you sell?
    • What famous house would you choose to live in? Why?
    • If you could change your name, what would it be?
    • What's your favorite memory?
    • What are you most proud of?
    • Name your favorite summer activity.
    • What is your favorite color?
    • What was the first career you wanted to have?
    • Describe your perfect day.
    • What is your biggest pet peeve?

Now, here are the bloggers that I'm nominating. Please check them out - they're fabulous!

If you have a blog you'd like me to check out, please leave a post in the comments! I love reading new blogs. :)

    Fancy Friday: Stripes

Last week, I went wedding dress shopping with one of my friends. It was my first time going, and I had an amazing time (thanks for inviting me to go, girl!). While we were at the bridal shop, another girl was trying on dresses and ended up selecting this beautiful striped Hayley Paige gown. It was absolutely stunning and is even more beautiful than in the picture below. I completely fell in love with it, and it ended up influencing my Fancy Friday picks for this week.

Here are some other striped items that I've been eying lately. There's just something about black and white stripes... it's bold, it's classic, and it's fun. What do you think of these items? What would you pair them with?

    (4) Marc Jacobs slip on shoes / (5) Zara lined jacket /  (6) Accessorize black and white striped umbrella

    Birthday Gifts

If you're anything like me, you suffer from gift anxiety. While I love celebrating birthdays with friends, I always freeze at the thought of knowing what to give to them. I want to make it personal - not simply picking up a gift card or a bottle of wine. But sometimes it's hard to know what to buy! Here are the items I picked up for my friends and how I put the packages together. To me, the wrapping of the gift is almost as important as the gift itself. Beautiful wrapping can make a small, simple gift seem all that much bigger. I've certainly been more creative with my wrapping (I just pulled together craft materials I had around the house), but stay tuned to see what I did.

I purchased the items pictured above for my friend Katie. Like me, she loves lip products, so I figured that she would appreciate a lip-themed gift. I bought her my favorite lip scrub from Lush (except in the Mint Julips flavor - absolutely delicious), a beautiful bright Revlon Lip Butter in Lollipop, and the best lip balm around - Nivea Lip Butter in Vanilla & Macadamia Kiss.

The other items were for my friend Lauren. When we were in college together, she was never all that interested in makeup. However, over the years her interest has grown quite a bit, so I thought I would give her some things to expand her collection. Plus, she's moving across the country in a few days, so I thought these items would be easy and small to take with her. I purchased her one of my favorite items, Maybelline Baby Lips in "Cherry Me." It's a very moisturizing product that leaves your lips with the most beautiful pink/red wash of color. I also picked up two products that I've heard amazing things about - Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze (I need to get myself one of these!) and Jordana Best Lash Extreme mascara (purchased one for myself too but didn't get to use it yet). I finished off her gift with some beautiful raspberry colored gem earrings from Target.

A few weeks ago, I purchased two glittery boxes from Target ($3 for two boxes!) thinking that they might come in handy. And boy, they did! I found some white tissue paper, cut it in fours, and inserted it into each box to fill it up a bit. Next, I put the products inside.

After closing the lid, I tied some turquoise ribbon around one and some white ric-rac I had around the other. It would have been cute to add a flower to the top of the boxes, but I unfortunately didn't have any on hand. Here's how the boxes turned out.

I absolutely love making the outside of cards decorative, as well. Often, I'll add some scrapbook stickers, pearls, or small adhesive gems to the outside to spice them up. I didn't have any on hand, so some markers just had to do!

Have you bought any gifts for friends yet? Let me know in the comments! (Also, if anyone has any cute ideas for gift wrapping, I'm all ears!)

    Fancy Friday: Clutch Edition

I was browsing the internet this morning, looking for some inspiration for this week's Fancy Friday post. After a few minutes, I stumbled  upon this glittery, colorful clutch and I fell in love. Then I looked at the price tag... Eeks! $1,110 - way, way out of my price range. But that doesn't stop a girl from dreaming! Here's the way I would wear the clutch (probably to an event or a party). What would you pair it with?

    (1) Topshop prom dress; (2) Teardrop shaped earrings; (3) Sergio Rossi pointy-toe pumps

I absolutely love these videos and posts, and I think they're a great way to learn about quality products on the market. As a graduate student living on a tight budget, I try to make sure that I'll love every product I buy. (Why spend money on something I won't like?) I love hearing recommendations from others!

Here are the things I've been loving for the month. What about you?! Please let me know some of your favorites to give me ideas for my next shopping trip!
